Turning Points 2000: Chapter 9

Chapter 9 of Turning Points 2000 is all about parental and community involvement in schools. By combining schools with parents and the community, students will have a strong foundation on which they can learn more effectively. Parents should also create a home environment that encourages learning and also have high expectations for their child's learning. Moreover, with more constant contact between schools and parents there will be less of a reason for parents to put their guard up when a school calls home. Student-led conferences are also a way to get parental involvement (in a way) and have contact between parents and teachers. The surrounding community can also be seen as a an extension of the school as well and parents and schools should utilize the tools that the community may offer. Finally, a great way to incorporate the community is through service learning.

A lot of the information given in this chapter can be seen as common sense but most of it needs to be reiterated because many parents still are not involved enough with their children's education. Everybody wins when parents and the community are involved. Teacher and student attitudes both improve and that means more effective teaching is bound to occur. Holding parent nights in middle schools is a great way for teachers, parents, and those involved in the community to get acquainted. These types of get-togethers allow for all parties involved to develop some sort of communication structure.

I really liked your link on Parent's Night because when I think about it all I can see is the scene in Freedom Writers when only one parent shows up. If you do some of the activities they suggest then you can place more ownership on the parents. Also, like with students, technology is engaging!

This is very good work, as the member of the group who prepared the student led conference, I found the links interesting. The idea of a student led conference I think is great. Letting the students take control and set goals for themselves to meet gives them a sense of accomplishment. The parent night section was interesting it was a lot of good information for creating strong relations with parents.

The student led conference page has a lot of good information that could be helpful. The parents night page has some good tips about how to build a strong relationship with parents. These could be good to help parents and teachers have a good connection.

All of these links were easy and enjoyable to read. I really liked the student led conferences link because it focuses on not only how students are doing academically but why they are where they are. The service learning link could be very helpful because a lot of people still don't know what it is. I don't think that enough people know what it is so the link would be helpful in explaining the concept.

I really enjoyed the links about service learning and the 5 ideas for parents night. I think collaborating with both parents and the community is essential. Both of these links offered great ideas and suggestions for each of these, as well as the importance of establishing this rapport.

I love the link on student led conferences. I think it is important for the student to be the center, it puts more ownership on the student. I participated in student led conferences at my high school. It was a nice way to let my parents know where I was at and where I was headed and together, with my advisor, we were able to problem solve any areas of weaknesses and come up with a plan of action. Now, I also love service learning! I think it is a great way to incorporate what you are learning in a real life setting where you are doing something in/for the community.

I enjoy your links because they have a lot of resources in them. At the end of the articles there are lots of other books and websites to go to. I think that the last link was really neat because I thought the Teeshirt idea was kinda cute :)

I liked your website on Student-Led Conferences. I liked the fact that it talked about how a real middle school teacher handled a student-led conference. Good job!

Your first two links we really great. They incorporated all the information from the chapter as well as going into a little more depth. I really liked the Top 5 Ideas for Parents' Night. The whole idea of this website is involving students in parents night even though they can not be there. It is about building the relationship between the student and parents about the students learning.
Great links.

I love the Parents Night site. Parent night can be very awkward and I think some of the ideas presented help to make it easier on the teacher and the parents.

I liked all three links. Student lead conferences and service learning are ideas that I would like to do when I become a teacher. My favorite though was the parent site. Parents are defiantly a group that you need to have on your side. It is important to establish a relationship with them so you have support to help the student succeed.
